How to create a broad public interest in the topic of customs? Designed by TRIAD Berlin, the new permanent exhibition of the German Customs Museum in Hamburg lives up to this task. On a total space of 800 sqm, exhibits, media stations, and interactive features yield exciting insights into the history and current responsibilities of customs authorities. The exhibition examines the role of customs in the context of culture and society. The upper floor provides an overview of customs history from the Roman Limes to the Fall of the Berlin Wall. On the ground floor, visitors discover the manifold tasks and responsibilities of customs authorities – from securing international trade, the protection of species, and consumer protection to the fight against illegal employment. Every year, the “gem” of Hamburg‘s Speicherstadt (the old warehouse district) attracts close to 110,000 visitors and has become an integral part of the German museum landscape.
